Stairlift Buying Tips

A stairlift is a very expensive item and therefore before buying it is wise to carefully consider whether it is the best solution for you. It may meet your immediate needs but will it meet your needs in the foreseeable future?

You do not want to be in a position where you’ve shelled out thousands for a lift but can no longer safely use it 6 or 12 months later! Vital questions you must consider include: Can you transfer on/off the lift safely and how long will you be able to do this? The answers to these questions will be heavily related to your medical condition. Try and make an informed decision by thinking about how your particular condition will or might in future affect your abilities. If you require a partner or someone else to physically assist you in getting on and off the lift this also raises questions! Are they themselves fit enough to assist? How much assistance is needed? How long will they be able to assist? Will they always be around the house when needed?

There is further guidance on our website related to how certain medical conditions can affect a person’s ability to safely transfer and/or operate a stairlift. There is also further information relating to possible alternative living solutions in cases where a stairlift may not be the best solution.

Can you rent stairlifts?

Yes stairlifts can be rented but not all major manufacturers may offer this option. Stannah is one of the major manufacturers who offer a rental service for both new and reconditioned models. Bear in mind also that in the UK there is a regional network of small independent firms who specialise in fitting and renting out second hand stairlifts. Many of these offer a valued local service and are an alternative to major manufacturers  It may be worth checking to see if there is an independent dealer in your area as they can often be competitive on prices compared with a manufacturer.
